The figures here are published national ranges from cost guides. They aren't quotes. Each one is a range at least two independent cost guides agree on. Use them to check a price, then ask flooring companies near you to measure and quote the job.

Ceramic tile, and a floor of about 200 square feet

Job Published range
Ceramic tile $12 to $40 per square foot, installed1-2
About 200 square feet of tile $2,000 to $5,0003-4

Installed means the tile and the labor to set it. A price for about 200 square feet is for a floor of that size, so don't multiply it by the square feet.

Taking up old tile, and the floor underneath

The installed ranges are for the new floor. Taking up the old one, and any subfloor that has to be replaced, are priced on their own.

Job Published range
Taking up old tile $2 to $3.25 per square foot5-6
Taking up an old floor, any material $1.50 to $3 per square foot7-8
Replacing subfloor $3 to $10 per square foot9-11

Rules that come with the job

  • Glazed tile and lead. The EPA says ceramic tile glaze is neither a surface coating nor a painted surface, so a job that disturbs it isn't covered by its lead-safe rule, even where the glaze contains lead.12 Painted baseboards and trim taken off in a home built before 1978 can still be covered. Lead-safe rules for floor work explains when.
  • Old vinyl or asphalt tile. Vinyl floor tiles and the backing on sheet vinyl can contain asbestos.13 If one of those is coming up to make way for tile, read Asbestos in old floor tiles and sheet vinyl first.
  • Permits. The model residential code lists tiling among finish work that needs no permit, and states and towns can change that.14 Do you need a permit for new flooring or subfloor repair? has each state's rule.

Prices we don't give

  • One range for every kind of tile. The cost guides disagree on tile in general, so we give ceramic and a floor of about 200 square feet instead.
  • Porcelain and stone. Only one cost guide prices a porcelain floor in a way we could compare, so there's no range we can stand behind yet.

Each company on this site is listed with its phone number where it has one, so you can call two or three and compare. You can also send a request through the request form.

Ranges compiled from HomeGuide, Fixr and Angi, and rules from the US Environmental Protection Agency, checked October 2026.
