A price for about 200 square feet is for a floor of that size, so don't multiply it by the square feet. For a bigger or smaller room, use the per square foot ranges. For any material, new flooring comes to $5 to $15 per square foot, installed.13-14

Taking up the old floor

The installed ranges are for the new floor. Taking up the old one is priced on its own.

Old floor Published range
Carpet $0.50 to $1.60 per square foot15-17
Tile $2 to $3.25 per square foot18-19
Any material $1.50 to $3 per square foot20-21

Old vinyl floors and asbestos

The EPA lists vinyl floor tiles, the backing on vinyl sheet flooring, and their adhesives among the places asbestos may be found in a home.22 OSHA's rule for flooring companies treats asphalt and vinyl flooring put in no later than 1980 as containing asbestos unless it's shown not to.23

If the floor coming up is old vinyl or asphalt tile or sheet vinyl, don't sand it or take it up yourself. Asbestos in old floor tiles and sheet vinyl explains what to do instead.
