The figures here are published national ranges from cost guides. They aren't quotes. Each one is a range at least two independent cost guides agree on. Use them to check a price, then ask flooring companies near you to measure and quote the job.
Solid or engineered
| Floor | Published range |
|---|---|
| Solid hardwood | $11 to $23 per square foot, installed1-2 |
| Engineered hardwood | $7 to $20 per square foot, installed1-4 |
Solid hardwood is made from a single piece of wood, and engineered hardwood is made of several layers.1 Installed means the flooring and the labor to put it down.
A room of about 250 square feet
About 250 square feet of hardwood, installed, comes to $2,250 to $6,250.1, 5
That's a price for a floor of that size, so don't multiply it by the square feet. For a bigger or smaller room, use the per square foot ranges above.
Against other floors
New flooring of any material comes to $5 to $15 per square foot, installed.6-7 What vinyl plank and laminate floors cost, What tile floors cost and What carpet installation costs have the other floors, and What it costs to refinish hardwood floors has the price of sanding and refinishing a floor you already have.
What's priced apart
The installed ranges are for the new floor. Cost guides list taking up the old floor and the state of the subfloor as costs of their own.1
| Job | Published range |
|---|---|
| Taking up the old floor, any material | $1.50 to $3 per square foot1, 4 |
| Replacing subfloor | $3 to $10 per square foot8-10 |
Ask what your quote includes: taking up and hauling away the old floor, any subfloor work, and the trim.
Rules that come with the job
- Homes built before 1978. Sanding a painted floor or taking off painted trim in a home built before 1978 can come under the EPA's lead-safe rule.11 Lead-safe rules for floor work explains when.
- Old vinyl or asphalt tile underneath. If the hardwood is going in where old vinyl tile or sheet vinyl comes up, read Asbestos in old floor tiles and sheet vinyl first.
- Permits. Whether new flooring or subfloor work needs a permit depends on your state and town. Do you need a permit for new flooring or subfloor repair? has each state's rule.
Prices we don't give
- One range for every kind of hardwood. The cost guides' figures for all hardwood together don't agree closely enough to give one range, so we give solid and engineered separately.
- Repairing a subfloor, as opposed to replacing it. The cost guides price repairs too differently to give a range.
